It has long been used to prevent or even heal all sorts of diseases.

New Yoga Class on Monday Evening - with Elena Porten - 5:45 to 7:00 PM
Elena's Yoga Style draws from Asthanga Vinyasa Yoga and is influenced by the Alignment principles of Anusara Yoga. The class uses fundamentals of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga to create a dynamic flow. Ashtanga yoga involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures, flowing from pose to pose with a fluid pace. The class is invigorating and it produces internal heat that helps to improve circulation, establish a light and strong body, and calm the mind. Ashtanga is the original "flow vinyasa" practice. This class is intended for individuals who want to both reestablish and push their physical and mental practice.
Elena began practicing yoga throughout college, where she realized yoga provided an excellent source of balance amidst stressful work/study demands. Yoga not only brought relaxation and released tension for Elena, but it also complimented her athletic lifestyle and passion for long-distance running. After a serious ski accident in 2012, Elena didn't think she would ever have the same flexibility and strength in her lower back. Following a year mixed with severe back-pain and challenges as her mothered successfully battled Leukemia, Elena moved to Peru and found herself living in a Yoga community. In Peru she practiced restorative yoga to re-strengthen her back. She also used yoga, meditation, reiki, and community support to heal her body, mind, and spirit. Inspired by Yoga's ability to open her heart, Elena completed a 200-hour certification in Peru, which focused on Ashtanga Vinyasa fundamentals. Through first-hand experience, Elena recognizes the restorative value of yoga. Through strengthening your core, focusing on breath, and finding the connection between body and mind, one can rehabilitate and move through the world with grace. Elena's instruction is developed to support all bodies, with a focus on proper alignment and core strengthening. Her classes allow students to develop a strong yoga practice, while also cultivating awareness, stillness, balance, and connection.
Taught by Elena Porten.

Hula is a way of life in Hawaii, a celebration, a moving meditation, an expression of gratitude. Participants will experience hula as a dance of gratitude for nature, learning how basic hand and body movements express a tale of the Earth, Sea and Spirit. Classes are offered with cultural integrity, practicing Hawaiian chant or song, becoming aware of the sacred Huna principals and studying the kaona (spiritual meaning) of each hula. Classes help to instill within students the true essence of the hula- a prayer for Mother Earth and her inhabitants.
Dancing the hula, one develops body strength, coordination and grace. Hula enhances the well-being of body, mind and spirit. Most classes focus on learning Auana (modern) hula, danced to beautiful Hawaiian melodies. Sometimes, Kahiko (ancient) hula is also taught.
Alice is a certified teacher with a MEd and has taught children and adult classes about dance, nature, art and community. She has been a haumana of the hula with Kumu Hula (master teachers) Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett and Keala Ching since 2001. She first studied hula and several other dance forms as a young child. At the University of New Hampshire she studied modern dance and performed in the UNH and Synergy Dance Companies. She has also taught Creative Movement for children and Zydeco partner dancing for adults. She is a long-time Contra Dancer from New England. Currently she is becoming certified as a Yoga Calm instructor for children. For her, dance is a universal language of Joy.
